Below is an email the Huguenot & New Rochelle Historical Association(HNRHA) received from Margaret Downey, President of the Thomas Paine Memorial Association(TPMA). The HNRHA fully supports the efforts of the TPMA to help erect the long overdue Memorial Statue to founding father, Thomas Paine.

Friend and Thomas Paine Enthusiast,
On Friday, February 11, 2022, legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives was introduced to honor Thomas Paine, one of America’s most important Founding Fathers, a great democratic philosopher, and a central force in the American Revolution.
The bill would authorize a statue of this overlooked hero of America’s independence in the nation’s capital — righting a historic wrong.
The Thomas Paine Memorial Association is asking you to urge your member of Congress to vote for House Bill Number 6720 (link: HR 6720). The bill’s language is:
Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD), along with a number of co-sponsors, introduced the Bill to create a Thomas Paine memorial in Washington, D.C., honoring a central American figure who has been forgotten by too many. Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, published in the run-up to the American Revolution, convinced a wavering public to support America’s fight for independence from the British crown.
Thomas Paine’s other great works, including The Crisis, The Rights of Man, and The Age of Reason, became defining texts of the Enlightenment.
Thomas Paine was a hero to many influential Americans, such as Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and Benjamin Franklin. Beyond his contributions to political philosophy and the American Revolution, Thomas Paine also made major contributions to science and technology. He helped to engineer an iron bridge and the steam engine.
It is a historic and symbolic wrong that no statue of Thomas Paine graces our nation’s capital. As one of America’s most significant Founding Fathers and as a visionary and thinker well ahead of his time, Thomas Paine deserves to be honored and remembered in the place that houses our national seat of government — a government he helped forge.
Please contact your Representative in Congress and ask them to vote for this bill. A Thomas Paine memorial would allow millions of Americans every year to not only visit and honor this Founding Father, but to learn more about the political philosophy and democratic ideals upon which their country was founded.
Here is a sample message that can be used for a telephone call or written message:
Dear United States Representative (fill in the name of your Representative),
I am pleased to see that your colleagues in the House of Representatives have introduced legislation to honor Thomas Paine, one of America's great Founding Fathers.
Thomas Paine should be remembered in the nation's capital not only for his seminal contributions to American democracy, but also for his writings that inspired the ideals upon which our nation was founded.
Each year, millions of visitors to Washington, D.C., leave the city without being introduced to this great American thinker and revolutionary. It is time for this long standing, historical oversight to be corrected.
Please vote in favor of this bill.
Thank you,
